The Want & Need

Edgewell was ambitious from the start with their Bulldog personal care line by producing the shaver with 95% natural ingredients. The shaver line was designed to be sustainable and eco-friendly with packaging that matched the brand promise. The tray design incorporated a stand-alone feature for shelf merchandising along with the ability to mesh with their current sealing material and technology. Additional packaging design requirements included incorporating a hangtag to increase merchandising capabilities. The color line needed to be immediately recognizable by the consumer as eco-friendly thus using a standard formulation with a natural, brown color finish.

The Solution

Be Green Packaging developed multiple packaging pieces including a custom retail tray for the razors, razor cartridges, and personal care products. The packaging design incorporated a ‘notch’ at the bottom of the tray to allow free-stand merchandising. A glue adhesive was added to accommodate the branding cardboard sealing. During the design phase, Be Green designed and developed product cavities so that the product had a ‘snap fit’ feature ensuring safe product delivery during transport and unboxing.

The Results

The brand achieved reducing not only the plastic within their product by 95%, but also decreasing the plastic within the packaging. The packaging tray is composed of plant-based fiber, the branded sleeve is recycled paper board, and the foil is cellulose-based resulting in a fully recyclable solution. The entire solution continues to gain market share within their key demographics while expanding their product retail distribution to meet demand. Upon the product’s release in retail, retailers struggled to keep inventory on the shelf due to the demand for an eco-friendly product with sustainable packaging.
