The results are in on DuPont‘s latest survey of packaging industry professionals in March of 2011. Of the nearly 500 professionals from around the world who responded to the survey, creating sustainable packaging is the number one priority, with 65% of respondents citing the goal as their biggest and most pressing challenge. As the green wave crests, companies who may have once been reluctant to embrace the green movement are now scrambling to catch up with the early adopters of sustainable principles.
According to William J. Harvey, president of Packaging and Industrial Polymers at DuPont, “Sustainable, cost-effective solutions that reduce packaging’s environmental footprint are a top goal across geographies…”. He went on to state that “This is especially true in the food and beverage industry, where consumer demand for products supporting health and wellness goes hand-in-hand with a demand for more sustainable solutions.”
Whole Foods Market was an early adopter of sustainable packaging, featuring compostable containers in its prepared foods, produce, and meat departments since 2007. Many of the worlds largest companies are now following suit: Gillette (UK, Proctor and Gamble), Dell Computers, Frito-Lay, and Coke have since instituted green packaging on some or all of their products. With established companies such as these investing substantially in sustainable packaging, one can be sure that the green revolution is in full swing.
The survey respondents were primarily located in the United States and China, with 41% and 44% respectively. The remaining countries of the world comprised the final 15%.
